Maltese health problem (would like advice)

Question:

If this were my dog, I would ask the vet specifically about the increased water consumption, which to me (I’m just an owner, not a vet) might suggest diabetes.  I would ask for a urinalysis. I don’t mean to be critical of your vet, since all the other symptoms do seem neurological. Best of luck with your pup, Marcus in Vermont

Hi.  I posted here about a year ago when my maltese was having some health problems.  It now appears he has something new going on, and I’m hoping to get some feedback on what all of you think it might be. Over the past week I’ve noticed he’s been drinking more water than usual. Yesterday, my husband noted that he looked shaky.  It seemed like he was trembling.  Later in the evening I noted that his eyes were really twitchy, especially the left one.  At this point he also appeared to have a hard time walking.  A few times he would simply fall down after taking a few steps. When my husband got home from work at 1:30AM I told him that I was really worried.  I called the emergency vet, and they said to bring him in. My husband took him in.  They ran a panel of bloodtests that all came back looking good.  The doctor, though, was concerned that maybe there is some type of neurological disorder going on. (Which really has me scared)  He did a test where he covered Skipper’s eyes and held the dog close to a table. Skipper started reaching out his left leg furiously.  The vet said that was unusual.  He said most dogs will wait until they feel the table before they reach up.  He also had Skip walk across the room and Skip was crossing his front legs when walking which was also unusual. They’re going to call me this morning once they get in touch with a neurologist, but I would love to hear any input that you have. Sincerely, Jennifer BTW ~ Skipper is 3 years old.
