Question:

I remember my dad "reprogramming" those with a penknife up on Fort Southwick where there was a great fireworks display every year (MOD) and the most beautiful night-time view of the Solent. That, together with the now defunct Tricorn building were fond memories of a place I once called home – Portsmouth. I sure do miss the place though. The sailing, Hovercraft and walking on Southsea common, strolling along the old fort wall to try and catch a glimpse of the Isle of Wight. That, and playing golf with my Gramps who beat everyone on the pitch and put single-handed after he broke his wrist. Can you tell I’m getting a little sentimental about things…. must be the move in the air. cb — Some people have something to say… others have to say something!

Response:

as a W2kpro user, I must say that it’s been the least bad release from M$ in recent years. I’d definitely check out ebay for a used copy… http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=11229&item=7… cb — Some people have something to say… others have to say something!

Response:

:-O southsea common? I got pissed up there one night…lol – I was a competitor in the UK Transplant Games at ‘Pompey’ in about 1984, and they had the annual gala night in a marquee on Southsea common (I assume that’s the bit of grass near the piers/amusement arcades?) with Rory Bremner as the star entertainer of the night

makes me think of the days when people thought edlin was fit for word processing. Me? started out on the old Vic 20. Still have it and it works…. Loved the shape of the power supply as it was a great foot warmer in winter. Also went the 8086 route but had my first trojan on a copy of prince of persia on the 80286. Still the best game ever was Digger on an 386sx with PC sound and an orange monitor. I seem to remember that the machine was an olivetti. Also fun just afterwards was using DR-dos and the pretty good shell, pathfinder. Windows explorer is still a paltry second. Arrow keys to navigate directories, tab to switch panes… kept everything organised. One thing I’ll always remember is a dot matrix printer that scrolled a page (perforated of course) every time there was static electricity nearby such as when you sat on a chair next to it. Anyone remember buying Basic programs in book form and typing them in… first one was monstermunch at the tender age of 7 on the vic. Ah, those were the days…. and light pens… those were fun…. still have mine… wonder if they’ll make a come-back some-time… cb

CPM!  I still have a copy of the advanced version.. CCPM.  (that was "concurrent: CPM..a multitasking system) too bad it didn’t beat out DOS.  It was better.

HA DOS 1.1 … pure luxury! Remember punched cards and paper tapes and these hardware debug panels ? I would have really liked to get my hands on windoze 2000 pro, but nowhere locally (up to 50 mile radius) stocked it for sale, or they wouldn’t sell it unless I bought a new system from them; this was the preferable OS because I’d heard a lot of good reports about its stability and I know the older software I use for recording/sequencing (cakewalk pro audio 9.03, soundforge, logic audio platinum to name but 3) will definitely suport that OS.  I did get XP pro and install that (dual boot with 98SE that I run the older ‘productivity’ software I use, on) ….have to say I’m not overly impressed so far. Do any of you run any of the (older – I’ve had them nearly 3 years) music software I mentioned with XP Pro? If so, does it cause any problems that you’ve noticed? Also, would any of you care to offer opinion on the Line 6 Guitar port as a tool for recording onto PC with?

No doubt.  Win ME was an utter POS. If you think Win98 SE is stable, your heart will be stopped by their actual operating systems (Win2000 and XP). —   /"  ASCII Ribbon Campaign                | Todd H   /                                       | http://www.toddh.net/    X   Promoting good netiquette            | http://triplethreatband.com/   /  http://www.toddh.net/netiquette/     | "4 lines suffice."

Been there.  Done that.  Have the original disks.  Back to DOS 3.3 anyhoo :-) Yeah, amazingly little broke under DOS.  However, as a single tasking single user "operating system" that lacked virtual memory support, there really wasn’t much to break! —   /"  ASCII Ribbon Campaign                | Todd H   /                                       | http://www.toddh.net/    X   Promoting good netiquette            | http://triplethreatband.com/   /  http://www.toddh.net/netiquette/     | "4 lines suffice."

The fact that the shit of a mongrel dog with parasites and stomach infection smells worse than a healthy exhibition poodle’s shit doesn’t mean that the poodle’s shit isn’t shit ;) Seriously, if your hardware isn’t like five years old or so you should give winXP or win2k a spin. I’ve had 98 edition 1, and currently use Second Edition and I’ve found both a lot better than the P.O.S.  Millenium Edition that I made the mistake of installing. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> — >   /"  ASCII Ribbon Campaign                | Todd H >   /                                       | http://www.toddh.net/ >    X   Promoting good netiquette            | http://triplethreatband.com/ >   /  http://www.toddh.net/netiquette/     | "4 lines suffice."

daughter cleaning up the old ‘puter to take to college.. deleted the OS. I’m re-installing WIN 98, going well, until I need the reg number to complete installation.  Guess what we can’t find? anyone have a valid WIN 98 S/N, or some other solution? (except for actually a MS operating system)

There are many different flavors of win98 CD’s and getting a serial that matches your CD may be quite a trial and error process. —   /"  ASCII Ribbon Campaign                | Todd H   /                                       | http://www.toddh.net/    X   Promoting good netiquette            | http://triplethreatband.com/   /  http://www.toddh.net/netiquette/     | "4 lines suffice."
